"Sister Kim, there's been a death in the village." Sounds like out of the movies or
something, this is the reality of life in Parika. I was strongly admonished for not having
anyone represent YWAM at a previous funeral and found out everyone is expected to attend.
So, when I heard these words once again… I knew I was obliged to go. What an orientation for
Emese, our new staff member who had just joined us from Canada!
A neighbor two doors down from us died of AIDS at the age of 33. The wake and funeral were being held at
her home. The scene that unfolded will be forever etched on my mind. As we walked into the yard, we saw a
small eight year old girl sitting beside the open coffin, holding her dead mothers hand whispering
continually "I love you mommy". Oh the sting of this disease that continues to claim more lives and
create orphans. It was one of the more difficult funerals I've gone to but also an awakening to the
growing reality of AIDS/HIV in Guyana.
July was a busy month… Steve from USA joined us this past month and is a real blessing to us! He was
initiated into our YWAM base by a big hairy tarantula. Usually we like to plant plastic ones on our
unsuspecting new staff but we didn't need to! Ha
This tarantula makes THREE in three weeks!! I hate spiders, they are not my favorite things and I've
never quite gotten used to these eight legged creatures that God made. Why Lord? We measured the leg
of one of our hairy 'visitors' and it was 2 ˝ inches long. (one leg!) A friend who was visiting at the
time poured gasoline over the spider and killed it. I had to smile, yes, in Guyana, we shoot our snakes
and gas our spiders!! I'm referring to the shooting of the big anaconda caught in our neighbors yard a
couple of months back.
Our foundation for our new 40 X 50 ft building has been laid! Oh we are excited. It is
quite the undertaking in this hot weather. As we do not have a road on our property, sand, stone
and cement is all left on the road way to be brought in by wheelbarrow back to our construction
site, a good distance away. If any of our staff were NOT in shape when they arrived, they can not
make that complaint any longer. Our goal is to have it built by September. This would take a
miracle and this is what we need.
Thank God for generous making it possible to continue building. Recently as we looked
at our 'books', we realized we had no money left to continue, so we would have to stop.
Just then, word came in that a $1,000 donation had come in. This still wasn't enough to
finish the floor, with approx 12 truck loads of sand, 50 sacks of cement, rock and steel, we
needed $1,000 more! Then we received word, $1,000 has been sent to our account! OH GOD IS GOOD!
We have such a testimony of His faithfulness and it's an exciting season. The floor is almost
ready to be cast.
By faith we want to see this large building completed by the end of September! This will take approx
another $8,000 to do! Please pray specifically for this!
CAMP - My coworker
Beeno coordinated a camp for youth all over Guyana. Over 300 youth attended the camp, subsidized by a
team from the United States who also ministered. We are thankful that such a camp can be provided to
youth who otherwise would not ever attend a camp. Over 100 youth either made first time commitments
to the Lord or renewed their commitment to serve God. Isn't this exciting?
PRAYER NEEDS:
We submitted applications for two of our staff to receive work permits to stay in Guyana. Pray for
favor with the government and that this will be granted.
I will apply in August. Last year my work permit was rejected and it was a battle to stay in Guyana.
Pray for $8,000 usd to build our new building. On top of this we have our monthly land payment
which sometimes is difficult to keep up with.
Pray for unity of the churches in Guyana. Every two months all the churches gather for prayer for
each other and our community. I shared on missions at one of the meetings.
Presently we have three families and one single girl for our school in September and not enough housing!
There are many others now expressing interest in coming as well. It may be a BIG Discipleship school.
Two new staff are joining us in August. God is good and adding to us. Beenos son and his family have
also now joined us. They will attend our school and also are in need of more support. We continue to
grow in leaps and bounds. My cat Tigger also just had three kittens, so even our animal population
increases! Smile
Thanks for your prayers. We need them and depend on them. Thanks for partnering with us, this is
what we are called to do.
Thanks for your encouragement and support. Keep in touch and let me know how to pray for you.
May God bless you!
For Him,
Kim
